Meet NoDa Yoga!

Jenny

"Being active has always been a big part of my life.  When a friend recommended yoga to me in 2003, I thought 'why not?'  After my first class, I had so many questions. Why the chanting?  Why the twisting
and turning? Is this really a workout (even as I watched beads of sweat roll down)?

Little by little answers began revealing themselves.  Coming to the mat felt right, and I noticed a shift in my life towards overall health and wellbeing.
Wanting to share the "yoga love", I began teaching friends in local parks around Charlotte.  This led to my 230-hour certification from the awe-inspiring Stephanie Keach at the Asheville Yoga Center.  I hope to complete the 500-hour training soon as well.

I am grateful for the opportunities and challenges life presents.  Delighted
to be a part and teach at NoDa Yoga, I will always be a student at heart.

"Yoga has given me the courage and the strength to follow my heart and to do what I love.  I found yoga when I moved to Charlotte from New York City in 2003.  After years of working in advertising, auditioning for stage roles and teaching in the public school system, yoga gave me a place to slow down and to really look at where my life was going. Initially, the attraction to yoga was the physical aspect and the desire to de-stress and detoxify, but what was ultimately found was an underlying awareness of the 'self'; a way to connect to the mind, body and spirit. I completed my 230- hour Teacher Training from the Asheville Yoga Center with Stephanie Keach and I am currently pursuing my 500- hour advanced training with Stephanie as well.  I am also a certified Yoga Warrior, with specialized yoga training for war veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I enjoy teaching Vinyasa Flow, Slow Flow/Deep- Stretch and Kids Yoga and I believe yoga can benefit the very young to the very “wise”.  If there is one sutra I try to live my life by, it is this:

~Santosha~

By contentment, supreme joy is gained.

Learn to laugh at yourself and to be content with who you are and all that you have."

My formal studies in yoga began at the University of Rochester in New York where I earned a certificate in Eastern Philosophy & Yoga in 2001.  I continued studies in hatha vinyasa yoga and began teaching yoga classes for the American Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington DC.  After moving to Charlotte in 2009, I began studying Integral Yoga with Pat Joslyn in Dilworth, and received my RYT 200 certificate through her program.

My personal yoga passions are working with those who are just beginning their unique journey on the yoga path, and working with pre & post-natal women utilizing yoga to find balance and peace with body and baby.

For me, finding yoga was like finding a big, old key in a wooden chest that had been long forgotten in the dusty attic.  When you find that key, you just know that whatever door it unlocks, it’s going lead you on an amazing & epic adventure...

"No one ever has it all together. That's like trying to eat once and for all." -Anonymous

I love this quote because it reflects the grace I have found on my yoga mat. I took my first yoga class my senior year in high school and held a flirting relationship with the ancient tradition until February of 2008. It was then that I started practicing daily and received my 200 hour certification with Johnna Smith. Since then I have studied with Stephanie Keach and continue to learn from all the amazing teachers Charlotte has to offer.

I believe yoga is a powerful tool accessable to everyone. Wether you are looking to be more flexible, get stronger, find some reprieve from racing thoughts, or start a spiritual practice, yoga can help. Both my personal practice and teaching have been a wonderful source of empowerment for me and a way to connect with humanity.

I am currently in school for Creative Writing, so when I am not on my mat or teaching, I can be found at multiple coffee shops reading and writing. When this fails, I resort to long walks and music.
I look forward to seeing you in class and enjoying the beautiful space NoDa yoga provides!

I couldn’t touch my toes.  I’m not sure that I could even touch my knees before
I started practicing yoga in 2007.  As soon as I sank in to a regular yoga
practice, the changes that I noticed in all aspects of my life were undeniable.
Not  only could I finally touch my toes, but the migraines that used to come
knocking every couple of weeks made a rapid retreat, as did the panic attacks.
There is now an unmistakable lightness to what used to be a very heavy and
somber spirit.  I  am forever grateful for the peace and joy that yoga has shown
me, and I  am beyond excited to have the opportunity to share that joy at NoDa
Yoga
.
